Moving day looming on the horizon? Don’t panic! While packing up your entire life and transferring it to a new location might seem overwhelming, breaking it down into manageable chunks can make the whole process much smoother. As someone who’s helped countless friends move (and learned from their mistakes), I’m here to share some tried-and-true tips that’ll make your transition to a new home much easier.

Start Early (Like, Really Early)

The biggest favor you can do yourself is starting well before moving day. About six weeks out, begin sorting through your belongings. That stack of magazines from 2019? Those jeans you swear you’ll fit into again? Now’s the perfect time to be ruthless with what you actually need. Remember: every item you get rid of is one less thing you’ll have to pack, move, and unpack.

The Magic of Strategic Packing

Here’s a game-changer: pack room by room, and start with the spaces you use least. That guest room or those rarely-used kitchen gadgets? Pack them first. Label everything obsessively – future you will be incredibly grateful. Write not just which room it goes to, but what’s actually inside. “Kitchen – Blender, toaster, coffee maker” is infinitely more useful than just “Kitchen stuff.”

Create a Moving Command Center

Keep all your moving-related documents, important papers, and essential items in one designated spot. This includes your moving company contract, new house paperwork, school transfer documents, and any other critical items. Pro tip: pack a separate box or suitcase with everything you’ll need for the first couple of days in your new place – think toiletries, phone chargers, basic tools, and a change of clothes.

The Tech Transition

Don’t wait until moving day to figure out your utilities and internet setup. Contact service providers at least two weeks before your move to either transfer or set up new services. Nothing’s worse than spending your first night in a new house without electricity or Wi-Fi! Also, take photos of how your electronics are currently set up – it’ll make reconnecting everything so much easier.

Survival Kit for Moving Day Pack a day-of essentials box with things like:

  • Basic cleaning supplies
  • Paper towels and toilet paper
  • Light bulbs
  • Basic tools (screwdriver, pliers, scissors)
  • Snacks and water bottles
  • Phone chargers
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Paper plates and plastic utensils

The First 24 Hours

Once you’re in your new place, resist the urge to unpack everything immediately. Focus on setting up your bedroom first – you’ll want a proper place to crash after all that moving! Then tackle the bathroom and kitchen basics. Everything else can wait until you’ve had a good night’s sleep.

Don’t Forget the Details

Make a list of places that need your new address – banks, credit card companies, subscription services, and so on. Also, take photos of your empty old place (especially any existing damage) if you’re renting, and do the same at your new place before moving in.

Remember, moving doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Take it one step at a time, stay organized, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Before you know it, you’ll be settled into your new home, wondering what all the fuss was about!
