For an attached garage with an entrance door to a living space in the home, the following is required for the door.
The entrance door should have a door closer that automatically closes AND latches the door shut. The door should seal all around its edges to prevent garage fumes from contaminating the living space. Otherwise a potential safety hazard could exist at the doorway. In addition, the door itself should have a 20-minute Fire Rating, be at least 1 3/8” thick. Acceptable door materials include solid wood, solid wooden core-with steel paneling, or wooden-edged with solid-panel fiberglass, all with a 20-minute fire rating to withstand 20 minutes of exposure at 1400 deg F without cracking, splitting or rotting.
